Hoops on Mission holds an after-school basketball program at Orangewood and Franklin Park Elementary Schools and during-school mentoring programs at five local schools.
During the basketball camps, youths are separated into groups for boys and girls, and a topic of the month is addressed — a recent topic was online bullying. In addition to basketball training, there are activities and crafts.
HOM founder Dwayne Jackson and volunteers visit schools weekly to check up on the program’s youths. Whether it’s bringing a much-needed meal or talking about family and character traits, HOM is here to help children reach their full potential.
“Hope is everything. Give a kid just a little bit of hope, and it can change their lives forever,” Dwayne says.
Dwayne overcame a lot of obstacles, including violence and bullying, so he can relate to what many youths in the community are facing. He also enjoys being a guest speaker at schools and motivating youngsters.
